Understanding the UV Index Scale
The UV Index measures solar ultraviolet radiation intensity on a scale from 0 to 11+:
- 0-2 (Low): Minimal sun protection needed for most skin types
- 3-5 (Moderate): Seek shade during midday, wear sunscreen SPF 30+
- 6-7 (High): Reduce sun exposure between 10am-4pm, protection essential
- 8-10 (Very High): Extra precautions required, avoid midday sun exposure

Your skin type determines how quickly you burn and your recommended sun protection:
- Type I: Very fair skin, always burns, never tans. Burn time at UV 8: ~12 minutes
- Type II: Fair skin, usually burns, tans minimally. Burn time at UV 8: ~18 minutes
- Type III: Medium skin, sometimes burns, tans uniformly. Burn time at UV 8: ~25 minutes
- Type IV: Olive skin, rarely burns, tans easily. Burn time at UV 8: ~35 minutes
- Type V: Brown skin, very rarely burns. Burn time at UV 8: ~55 minutes
